Few things in life are more exciting than the 4min blast of a perfect rock song.
Ace of Spades… Summertime Blues… Goodbye t’Jane… Smells Like Teen Spirit…
Tin Soldier… the list is long!
Songs like these somehow manage to both encapsulate and express something
profound and, dare I say it … Sacred?
A giddy feeling of elated expectation, possibly equaled only by finding yourself
carrying a plastic bag filled with 3 bottles of beer and a 10 pack of cigarettes on
an early Saturday afternoon with yer mates, when you’re almost 18, knowing
there is a party out there with your names on it. That kinda adrenaline soaked,
expectant kind of giddy!
There is nothing quite like it – the best feeling in the world.
The best rock songs capture this. Now, we’ve never been able to quite scale
those peaks of rock perfection, but we try our best, and the perfect 4 min banger
is something we’ll always come back to and try to nail. Stanley (tonight’s the night)
musically owes quite a lot to Slade and Kiss and other 70s power pop merchants,
but it is also somewhat related to earlier Motorpsychodelic attempts like You Lied,
Starmelt/Lovelight and Hey Jane, and while Stanley (tonight’s the night) might not
be quite perfect either, we felt like we got close to something really good with this
one!
Icarus flew too close to the sun, and we fear that the hubris we court playing our
roles in Arild Ommundsen’s video to such perfection, will come back and bite us
on the ass… But if the perfect 4min rock song is divine, our gods are rock gods.
And as Stanley (tonight’s the night) is but a tribute to them, we feel fairly certain
our wings won’t melt and our asses will remain unbitten.
Rock on!
